Andriy Shevchenko celebrates as he grabs the equaliser against England for the Ukraine, but the Three Lions went on to win 2-1
Ukrainian international Andriy Shevchenko has been through difficult spells with both Chelsea and AC Milan in the past three years. However, the prolific striker returned to Dynamo Kiev last summer and is since enjoying his football again.

"I've returned to Kiev in good physical condition and am enjoying football again. This is very important. I felt a shadow of myself because of the problems with my neck last season. The injury wasn't allowing me to work as I could and to play at my usual standard," said Shevchenko to uefa.com.

"Since returning to Kiev I have not missed a single match and, if I'm not mistaken, not even a single training session. The feel of the ball is with me again and regular match practice has helped to restore my agility. The only thing I would like to have is a bit more luck.

"Head coach Valeri Gazzaev demands a powerful and aggressive manner of play. He gives me instructions and I try to follow them on the field. I know sometimes I choose the wrong position but, in general, the situation is not bad," continued the attacker.

"It was very difficult in the first matches; I felt my physical condition was not the best. But things improved eventually and I have had a second wind this autumn."

Belgium international forward Moussa Dembele could leave Dutch side AZ in January and his agent claims Milan are in pole position to secure his services.

The 22-year-old has drawn attention from a number of clubs across Europe and his Italian representative, Gabriele Savino, has revealed he has already discussed a potential transfer to Milan.

“Moussa is a player whom I am offering, along with my associates, to Italian teams such as Milan,” Savino told Calciomercato.it.

“AZ won the title in Holland last term, but are not having a great season this year and the club’s problems are playing a part.

“Our idea is to secure a transfer in January and we want to bring him to Italy, even though English clubs have also sounded us out.

“We believe that Dembele is a top-class player for his qualities and for what he can give to an important club. Then again, we must wait to see what Milan’s intentions are.

“Dembele would really need a fresh start and new adventure. But we must find a club that believes in him.”

Milan could indeed take up the agent’s offer if they release out-of-favour Dutch striker Klass-Jan Huntelaar in January.

The agent of Milan striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar has dismissed reports his client is poised to leave the club in January as ‘paper talk’.

The Dutch international has been a peripheral figure at the San Siro since his summer move from Real Madrid and has been linked with several teams in England and in his home country.

“What I can say for certain is that he is a Milan player at the moment and reports about interest from other clubs are just paper talk,” agent Arnoldus Oosterver told Tuttomercatoweb.

“This does not mean I am ruling out a January exit, but I want to stress that there have not been any contacts with other clubs for now.

“Huntelaar is settled at Milan. Of course, he would be happier if he played more. Then again, I think this applies to any player.

“And it’s also normal that there are transfer rumours if a player plays little while it’s all quiet when they regularly take to the pitch.”

Buenos Aires-born Italian Under-21 international Ezequiel Matias Schelotto has been attracting attention from a number of Serie A's top clubs, according to Tuttosport.

Widely regarded as one of the best players in the division, the youngster is currently co-owned by Cesena, where he presently plays his football, and Serie A side Atalanta; who purchased 50% of his registration before loaning the player back to the Serie B outfit.

Atalanta are already believed to be in talks to buy-out the remaining 50% of Schelotto’s contract and with Cesena officials believed to enjoy a fruitful relationship with the La Dea hierarchy, a deal is thought to be almost complete.

However, news of fierce competition from some of the biggest clubs in the peninsula will undoubtedly worry Atalanta.

Milan are the most recent club to have been linked with the player, despite their assurance that they are not in a position to make any moves in the winter window, while Juventus and Fiorentina are said to harbour a more serious interest in the winger.

After the match with Fiorentina was postponed due to poor weather conditions, Milan players have gotten some bonus time off during the holiday season.

Despite this, the Rossoneri's schedule will not change and they will return to training on December 28 as planned, when loan signing David Beckham will join his team-mates, according to sport.it.

Milan's first match of the new year is on January 6 against Genoa at San Siro.

The Rossoneri are hoping to avoid losing any ground on Champions League opponents Manchester United in terms of fitness as the English side will play throughout the holiday season, with matches against Wigan and Hull City in the Premier League.

Milan currently lie second place in Serie A, eight points behind city-rivals Inter, but with a game in hand.

Milan midfielder Andrea Pirlo is looking forward to teaming up with David Beckham at the San Siro once again and has hinted the English star will pose a major threat to his former team, Manchester United.

Beckham will join up with the Italian side on a six-month loan from the LA Galaxy and will feature from January onwards, while Milan take on the Red Devils in the Round of 16 of the Champions League.

"You could see Beckham come off the bench to score a freekick at Old Trafford. That is his kind of mentality," the Italian international explained to the People newspaper.

"Knowing David, he would not celebrate if he scored. He has too much class."

The 'Spice Boy' also spent a loan period with the Rossoneri last season and Pirlo is convinced that he will be a positive influence again.

"Beckham is among the top five players in the world and has demonstrated that at both club and international level," he concluded.

The 34-year-old made 18 appearances in Serie A in 2008-09.

The match beteween Fiorentina and AC Milan, scheduled to take place on Saturday night at 20:45 CET has been postponed due to bad weather in the Tuscan city.

Earlier reports had claimed the game was at risk of being cancelled at the last minute and it appears this has turned out to be the case.

Fiorentina club staff and groundsman battled all day to clear the snow, but another downpour on Saturday forced both clubs and the authorities to decide to cancel the match. A new date for the game has yet to be confirmed.

The early evening kick off between Bologna and Atalanta has also been postponed due to the bad weather.

Fiorentina-Milan Match At Risk Of Being Called Off Due To Heavy Snow - Report

Artemio Franchi - Fiorentna Stadium
Saturday night's Serie A clash between Fiorentina and Milan at the Artemio Franchi is at risk of being postponed after heavy snowfall overnight has caused less than perfect match conditions.

Both La Gazzetta Dello Sport and La Repubblica are reporting the game faces last-minute cancellations in light of the dubious weather conditions. Heavy snowfall in Florence overnight has caused the authorities to consider the safety implications for both players and fans.

Fiorentina have had the underpitch heating on since Friday afternoon and the surface temperature is said to be a stable 35 degrees Fahrenheit. While the snow appears to have melted, dangerous ice patches have formed on the pitch. It is said orange coloured footballs and a red paint may be used to improve playing conditions if the game is given the all clear.

However, the game's go-ahead is not directly linked to the safety on the pitch. The authorities are concerned of the conditions in the stands at the Artemio Franchi as well as those in and around the roads leading into the ground. Il Commune di Firenze (the local council in Florence) are concerned that people travelling to the stadium risk their own and others safety on the roads, which could cause havoc for the local area.

Club and council staff have been hard at work trying to clear the snow, but a decision or official announcement from either side has not been made. In any case, the game risks being cancelled at the last minute.

Bologna, just 45 kilometres away from Florence, has also been hit by the weather, meaning the game between the Rossoblu and Atalanta is also at risk.

The Dutchman has become incresingly concerned that his lack of playing time at San Siro will have a direct impact on whether he makes the plane for South Africa. Huntelaar has clenched his fists against Milan and is not willing to miss out on the World Cup by sitting on their bench.

"I don't know if my future will still be at Milan. I have played little and the World Cup is drawing closer," he told Algemeen Dagblad.

"Everyone wants to be at the World Cup, but I am aware that sitting on the bench may not make that possible.

"Leonardo has praised me, that's true, and I know his scheme employs just one centre forward, but I want to play more."

Huntelaar has recently been linked with Manchester United.

Manchester United's Patrice Evra has declared he is hungry to eliminate David Beckham and his newly adopted AC Milan from the Champions League, after a long waited return to Old Trafford.

Beckham re-joined Milan on loan from L.A. Galaxy, and is poised for a showdown with the club that sparked his profitable career.

But that is where the celebrations end for him, according to Evra, who is enjoying the prospect of Beckham returning, but doubly excited at the idea of defeating his men at his former home ground.

The French international told the Press: "I am very happy for David Beckham. He did a lot of great things for United and I want to say to him ‘Welcome Home’."

"I have met him. He is a gentleman. He is a good person and a good professional. This is why Milan wanted him to go back there.

"I like that type of player. He is still one of the best right-footed players in the world. But I hope he plays badly and I intend to make sure he doesn’t do very well."

The 28-year-old added that whilst Beckham will be the draw-card to this match, there will be ten other players on the pitch that are equally important to contain.

He added: "I am more interested in playing against AC Milan than David Beckham.

"What I do know is that our confidence is high. For us, the target every year is to reach the final, and from there to win it," he said.

Fiorentina striker Alberto Gilardino will come up against his former side AC Milan this weekend, as the Viola look to bounce back from a 2-1 loss to Chievo Verona.

"We know what to correct in order to prepare for the challenge with Milan and I hope we can finish the year well," he was quoted as saying by uefa.com.

"A lord of this city? Let's not exaggerate. For me, it is a pleasure to play here. I am happy with my choice [to come to Florence]. I am doing well."

The Italian international was not a success at Milan, losing his place in the starting XI and becoming a fixture on the bench before opting to move to the Viola in 2008, where he has flourished.

"It's been a positive 2009 for me at Fiorentina, after a difficult year at Milan and I believe I have repaid their faith. However, now we must do even better."

The 27-year-old has scored ten goals in all competitions for the Viola in the 2009-10 campaign thus far.

"We'll have to cover well and keep up with their tempo, but also play without fear. This is how we can play a great match."

Despite several injuries this season, Fiorentina qualified for the knockout stage of the Champions League, an improvement from their last European campaign.

"We are very united on and off the field," said the ex-Brescia player.

"This is not just rhetoric. We have a solid foundation that enables us to overcome certain difficulties."

The representative of Olympique Lyonnais midfielder Michel Bastos has officially invited bids for the 26-year-old by saying that ‘anything can happen after the World Cup’.

Bastos’ impressive performances for the Ligue 1 giants have alerted several teams across Europe and his agent Duro Ivanisevic has confirmed that some Serie A heavyweights are also monitoring the situation.

“Yes, Michel is being followed by a number of top clubs in Europe, including Italy,” he told Calciomercato.it.

“However, it is impossible for him to leave Lyon in January. He [only] arrived last summer and is happy there.

“There is a Champions League to play for and then he hopes to go to the World Cup with the Brazilian national team.

“This is no time to think about these kinds of things, but anything can happen after the World Cup.”

Juventus and Milan are believed to be the most interested parties in Italy and were already linked with Bastos during the summer transfer window.

“But Juve and Milan didn’t contact me last summer,” insisted the representative.

“However, we did have talks with a few Spanish sides before he signed for Lyon.”

Bastos joined the French outfit from Lille last July and committed to the club until 2013.

The agent of Milan centre-back Kakhaber Kaladze has moved to end speculation that the Georgian has grown frustrated at his lack of playing time under boss Leonardo and will seek a January exit.

Reports earlier this week claimed that Kaladze was left disappointed last weekend when he was over-looked for the visit of Palermo despite Thiago Silva’s injury lay-off.

But the player’s agent, Vincenzo Morabito, is adamant that the Italian media are making a mountain out of a molehill.

“Milan cannot afford to lose a precious piece like Kaladze at the back,” Morabito told fcinter1908.

“With Thiago Silva being on the sidelines, Kaladze’s presence will become fundamental again for the Rossoneri.”

Kaladze also reiterated on Wednesday that he remains committed to the club after the rumours emerged, and maintained he is eager to honour his contract which will run out in June 2011.

After a disappointing start to his life at Milan, Brazilian star Ronaldinho seems reborn this season and has revealed the secret behind his renaissance.

“The fans and the team are behind me and this makes things easier. It is a perfect moment for me. I fell very well both in the head and in the body.”

Milan President Silvio Berlusconi pushed the club into signing Ronaldinho in 2008 and tipped him to rediscover his best form last summer after his compatriot Kaka left for Real Madrid.

“I am very happy with the faith that was put in me by President Berlusconi last summer,” explained Ronaldinho.

“It is an added motivation to work well and repay him by doing my best so that Milan will resume winning.

“He has done a lot for me so that I could join Milan. For me President Berlusconi is No 1.”

Spanish Inquisition: The Galacticos Are Not The Be-All And End-All Of Real Madrid

Gonzalo Higuain,Valencia, Real Madrid (Getty Images)
Photo Gallery

Gonzalo Higuain,Valencia, Real Madrid (Getty Images)
It's funny, isn't it, that you spend €250 million in signing galactic megastars and the players who rescue you are from an earlier regime, both Argentinians, one who was your most consistent outfield player last season but is uncertain of his first team regularity this campaign and the other a loan-returnee but reportedly not embraced by the coach?

On Saturday night at the Mestalla, Real Madrid played their fifth really big game of the season and they accomplished what they had failed in others: they won. Without two of their most recognised and publicised Galacticos.

The Chequered Past

Prior to Saturday night Real Madrid had taken on three big teams and had lost to all of them. Their first acid test was against Andalucian giants Sevilla in early October and they lost 2-1 but not before Sergio Ramos had blasted his last minute shot wide of the target. True, Cristiano Ronaldo wasn't there but Kaka and Xabi Alonso were, and neither looked otherworldly.

Then came Milan to the Santiago Bernabeu for a Champions League group game and this time it culminated in a 3-2 defeat to a side who looked at the time to be playing for survival rather than for silverware in Serie A. It was the first truly galactic game Madrid had featured in since the Neo-Galactico era commenced in the summer and without their most expensive Galactico, Los Blancos deflated.

The away match was, of course, a closer affair and Madrid exhibited some of their best football this season in the first half an hour or so, eventually drawing 1-1 and somewhat tempering the disaster of losing to Segunda Division B side Alcorcon 4-0 away in the Copa del Rey.

Staring Down Into The Abyss

Soon it was time for the biggest club fixture in the universe, the clasico against Barcelona. And they lost 1-0, slipping two points behind the Catalans. Nevermind, that the best creative players on the pitch were the two most expensive players in Madrid's history; nevermind, that the best player on the pitch was a certain Carles Puyol, a fact that exhibited that Barcelona had been pushed to the back in order to salvage themselves; the system of football is such that only a win matters in the end and in the end Madrid lost. Period.

And then came the trip to Valencia, without Ronaldo or Kaka and the possibility of falling eight points behind, a game in hand notwithstanding. Not that it was a very convincing, all-consuming, all-conquering victory, but it was a win nevertheless. And more importantly, a win against a big side in Spain who are threatening to break into the title race.

Dissections And Inquisitions

If in Andalucia it was more of a case of Sevilla being the better side than Madrid being the worse, then against Milan at home it was a case of their defenders and goalkeeper trying to formulate new rules of defending. Against Barcelona, by the time Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored, Madrid had created the two best chances only for Ronaldo and Higuain to spill them.

Against Valencia the plot was a combination of the aforementioned traits. Valencia had good chances and so did Madrid. The visitors' defending at times was lousy and their midfielders didn't look the most creative. Yet they won and won without Ronaldo and Kaka, perhaps demonstrating that they are not dependent on the duo, at least not to the degree of collapsing without them.

The man of the match was a certain Gonzalo Higuain. Keeping him on the bench is rapidly becoming a crime as he scored two well-taken goals. Karim Benzema, perhaps the only Galactico who has failed so for this campaign, suddenly looked brilliant playing on the left, cutting in to link with his teammates and neatly set up the first goal, Sergio Ramos looks to have rediscovered the brilliance that once made him the best right-back in the world and Lass remains class.

Off Against The Post!

Of course, Valencia are not amongst Europe's elite at present but on Saturday they did have an attack that was at least on par with that of Madrid. David Villa is the best striker in the world and scored his 12th league goal of the season with a fine header, Juan Mata appeared creative, Ever Banega was sensationally a beast and Pablo's runs didn't give the Madrid defenders much time to smoke the pipe.

Regaining The Tough Mentality

Madrid's win in Valencia was an exhibition that life at the most media-scrutinised club exists beyond the Ronaldos and the Kakas. Their victory against Los Che wasn't accomplished with flair or consummate brilliance but with determination, grit and an almost desperation to bag the points more with steel than with silk.

Their football wasn't very predetermined but they did get chances they should have buried and also hit the post once. The Whites appear to have discerned the tough, winning, never-give-up mentality that they so desperately lacked in the games they have lost.

Yet to undermine the on-pitch importance of Galacticism and Galacticos would be an exercise in futility. Last season Madrid struggled because of midfield creativity and so far this term they have been more enjoyable to watch. Madrid without Ronaldo and Kaka can grind out a win but grinding out a win is not what Galacticism stands for.

And lest anyone forgets, the set-piece for Madrid's winner on Saturday night was taken by the most important Galactico: someone who hails from the Basque country.

Former Milan coach Arrigo Sacchi has criticised the side after their 2-0 loss to Palermo, claiming Leonardo's men play like individuals rather than a team.

The Rossoneri were comfortably beating at San Siro as their chase for the Scudetto took a blow.

"I was left stunned by Milan, but it was always predictable that a loss would come," Sacchi told Controcampo.

Sacchi claims Milan rely too much on two or three key individuals, leaving them in a straitjacket when the going gets tough.

"Milan depend too much on certain players. Therefore it makes it difficult to get back into games when these players are not playing to their best," he concluded.

AC Milan captain Massimo Ambrosini did not look for excuses after the Rossoneri lost 2-0 to Palermo yesterday.

Milan quickly ran out of ideas on a cold afternoon at the San Siro and saw their unbeaten streak in Serie A come to an end after almost three months.

“We could have done better, no doubt about it,” ‘Ambro’ sighed on Sky Sport 24.

“But it’s fair to say that Palermo put in a great performance and deserved the victory.

“We must be honest and admit that Palermo deserved it.”

Milan had impressed in recent weeks after boss Leonardo switched to a new offensive 4-2-1-3 system.

“Perhaps our opponents are starting to understand how to trouble us with this new formation,” explained Ambrosini.

“But we can and must do better. This defeat can even be useful. We must do more, because only novelties and enthusiasm won't win us the Scudetto.”

“There’s just one voice from Milan and all the Milanisti: solidarity and affection towards President Berlusconi.”

The incident happened at the end of a political rally in Milan. The attacker, identified as 42-year-old Massimo Tartaglia, threw the statuette at Berlusconi’s face from close range while he was shaking hands and chatting with supporters.

Berlusconi suffered a fractured nose and bloodied lip and was kept in hospital overnight.

After securing their Champions League passage in midweek, Milan return to San Siro on Sunday looking to continue their recent good form on the domestic scene against Palermo.

In his pre-match press conference, Leonardo insinuated that he was expecting a difficult match against the Rosanero due to their flexibility, but wants his side to continue their winning streak in order to keep pace with city rivals Inter.

"Tomorrow we will go back to playing at San Siro - it's always nice to be able to go out onto the pitch with the support of our fans," he mused.

"I'm expecting an interesting match against Palermo. Palermo are a squad that plays good football and have maintained their own identity, despite the many coaching changes. They have some very flexible and versatile players. We will have to pay attention to them.

"I don't think Inter's defeat to Juventus last Saturday has changed Milan much," he continued. "We have gone from being seven points behind to only four, but there are still many games to go until the end of the season.

"At the moment, Inter, Milan and Juve are very close together and this makes the championship more interesting.

"However, I will always be focused on my task. I believe Milan have to maintain continuity, to think about our own way of playing so that we can stay in the upper echelons of the table until the end."

"There are just two more games before the break and I hope we can bag the six points."

Milan striker Ronaldinho claims he is better now than when he was at Barcelona in response to his new-found form.

The Brazilian appears revived this season. He is back on his feet and firing on all cylinders at Milanello and an indifferent start to the campaign and 'Dinho has explained his resurgence, believing he his far stronger compared to his days at Camp Nou.

"I am back to how I was. In fact I think I am even stronger now," he told Il Corriere Dello Sport.

"Everything seems easier now."

Ronaldinho has insists the positive upshot he has been enjoying has been influenced by coach Leonardo's framework.

"I am really good friends with Leonardo. We always speak about everything in my language. I have never had such a perfect relationship with a coach before."

With such good form and promise in the offing, the Brazilian believes he will not be ignored by Selecao coach Carlos Dunga in June for the World Cup.

"I want to play in a further two World Cups. How can Dunga not pick me if I carry on playing like this? I want to be the protagonist in South Africa," he concluded.

The agent of unsettled Roma full-back Cicinho has denied AC Milan have approached him regarding a move when the transfer market re-opens in January.

“I can tell you that I have not personally heard from Milan,” agent Riccardo Sarti told Tuttomercatoweb.

“I think it is just paper talk for the time being. I don’t know whether Milan have directly sounded out Roma.

“But I reckon they would have notified me in order to [ask] about the player’s potential availability to move.”

Cicinho has been on the fringes of the Roma squad so far this season after recovering from knee surgery and is said to be frustrated with his lack of playing time.

“Cicinho is feeling well, but he is happy,” insisted Sarti.

“Many things have been said about his non-involvement, but I can tell you that it’s the same for him if he plays or sits in the stands.

“He has never made a fuss about it, because he only has eyes for Roma. I don’t think he will move in January, but it’s too early to speculate about what will happen in June.”

AC Milan finished second in their group behind Real Madrid, so could face a number of the competition's strongest entrants. Without naming his preferred opponents, Milan defender Alessandro Nesta has spoken of the sides he hopes the Rossoneri will avoid in the last 16.

"Barcelona and Chelsea are the strongest, I'd rather not meet them," he told Calciomercato.com.

"With the others we would gladly play, even if Manchester United remains a strong side as always."

A meeting with Chelsea would pit Milan against their former coach Carlo Ancelotti, who led the team for eight years before leaving for Stamford Bridge this past summer.

Sevilla, Arsenal, Olympique Lyonnais and Bordeaux are Milan's other potential opponents in the two-legged tie.

Gianluca Zambrotta in action for Milan as he prepares for a throw in
AC Milan full-back Gianluca Zambrotta says the morale within the Rossoneri camp is sky-high after going through to the last 16 of the Champions League this week and they will set no limits.

“We hope to go as far as possible, hopefully right to the final,” the 32-year-old admitted to Sky Sport Italia.

“We’ll give it a shot. We’re in the last 16 and know that we are going to face important teams, but we believe in it.

“We are going through a good period of form and want to go all the way, both in the Champions League and in Serie A.”

Milan claimed a fifth win on the trot in the Italian league last weekend and are now only four points adrift of cross-city rivals and reigning champions Inter.

“We are all there and there is still a lot to go,” mused the Italy international.

“We all want to win the Scudetto and it will be tough until the very end. Things are going well for us after a difficult start and played good football in certain games.”

AC Milan centre-back Kakhaber Kaladze has advised want-away team-mate Gennaro Gattuso to stick it out at San Siro and patiently wait to be fit to regain his place in the first XI.

The Italy international midfielder is currently sidelined, but voiced his frustration last month at his lack of playing time under new boss Leonardo and hinted he could seek a fresh start in January.

“Rino is like a brother to me,” Kaladze told La Gazzetta dello Sport.

“I know what it feels like in this type of situations, but he must stay calm. If you get edgy, you will never recover.

“But he knows that he is a leader for us and if he is well he will play. Besides, it’s never nice to leave Milan…”

Gattuso has been heavily linked with a move to Premier League side Manchester City and is expected to hold key talks with Milan chief executive Adriano Galliani during the Christmas break.

Milan have revealed that defenders Daniele Bonera and Thiago Silva will not been seen in any official action until 2010.

"AC Milan announces that today medical examinations were performed on players Daniele Bonera and Thiago Silva," began a statement on the club's official website, acmilan.com.

"The first reported an elongation of the junction miotendinea soleus muscle of the left leg and is expected to return to the group after the Christmas break."

Bonera has yet to make an apperance in 2009-10, as injuries continue to plague his career.

The news for Thiago Silva is worse, and he is expected to miss around two months of action, but further tests will reveal the full extent of the damage he suffered during the match against FC Zurich.

"The examination of Thiago Silva emphasised a limited edema in the medial muscle of the left leg. For this reason, the Brazilian footballer will undergo specific training until next Tuesday, when he will receive additional medical tests."

The 25-year-old has been a key figure in the centre of defence for the Rossoneri, striking up a productive partnership with Alessandro Nesta this season.

AC Milan star midfielder Clarence Seedorf is confident the Rossoneri have what it takes to progress to the knockout stage of the Champions League next week, as long as they show the same determination they have showed domestically over the past few weeks.

The Diavoli coasted to a fifth win on the bounce in Serie A yesterday, thrashing Sampdoria 3-0 at home, and will now turn their attention to Tuesday’s key Champions League trip to Group C whipping boys Zurich.

“We will visit a ground that we must respect despite the results achieved by the other teams in our group,” Seedorf said to Sky Sport Italia of the Swiss side who have lost all their games in Europe so far, except for a shock win at the San Siro last September.

“We must play our game and try to dominate possession. Our preparation will be very important because we are favourites on paper.

“That is why our approach to the match will be crucial and this win over Sampdoria will help us a lot.”

AC Milan made light work of Sampdoria yesterday as the Diavoli wrapped up an emphatic 3-0 victory inside 23 minutes to close the gap on Serie A leaders Inter to four points.

A Marco Borriello headed effort from a pinpoint Ronaldinho cross opened the floodgates just two minutes in and the Neapolitan hitman has revealed the secret behind their rampant display.

“President Silvio Berlusconi made a surprise visit and we played like he wants us to,” Borriello told Sky Sport Italia.

“Boss Leonardo keeps putting faith in me and I owe him everything. We played a perfect game and I get along very well with Ronaldinho, [Alexandre] Pato and [Clarence] Seedorf. We are very happy.”

Next up for Milan is a crucial Champions League clash away to Zurich on Tuesday with the Rossoneri needing a win to book their place in the last 16 of the competition, regardless of the outcome of Olymique Marseille-Real Madrid.

“Yes, that against Zurich will be the most important game of the first part of this season,” concluded Borriello.

Milan CEO Adriano Galliani Defuses Gennaro Gattuso’s ‘Hotel’ Row

Milan chief executive officer Adriano Galliani has moved to calm the waters after apparently aiming a sideswipe at want-away midfielder Gennaro Gattuso earlier this week.

Gattuso has threatened to leave the club in January after sliding down the pecking order this season under new boss Leonardo and there are reports the 31-year-old is poised to reject a contract extension to leave the San Siro.

Galliani appeared to issue a stark warning to Gattuso on Friday by saying that “Milan are not a hotel”, but the Rossoneri transfer guru has now insisted he was just being funny.

“I was going into the Lega Calcio headquarters and I was late,” he explained to Sky Sport Italia.

“They asked me about Gattuso and I made a joke that I hoped would be amusing.

“I answered that way because they were asking me when he would be leaving or when he would arrive. And I said ‘this is not a hotel’.

“But nothing has changed. We will meet with Gattuso at the end of the year, before the Christmas break and will come to a decision.”

David Beckham Not Afraid Of Missing Out On England's World Cup Squad

Press conference: David Beckham - England (PA)
David Beckham says that he is not afraid of being left out of the England squad for the 2010 World Cup.

While ageing midfielder admitted that it would be a blow to fall prey to the axe, he insisted that he will respect any decision that manager Fabio Capello makes.

"I do not fear being axed for the World Cup," Beckham told the News of the World.

"If I don't make the squad it's not going to stop me supporting the team. Nothing is guaranteed - I have discovered that is true in my career.

"If I can be part of it then it will be amazing.

"Everybody knows how much I love playing for my country but the manager will always pick a squad he thinks will win the competition. That has to be the way.

"If I am not part of that, of course I'd be upset, but it is something I would still respect.

"It would because the manager felt it was right in terms of his system and having the best players in the team."

The LA Galaxy player admitted that the sting of being dropped from the national team after he stepped down from the captaincy in 2006 still haunts him to this day.

The 34-year-old also added that even his impending loan move to Milan will not guarantee a trip to South Africa.

"It still hurts that I was left out by Steve McClaren after I had resigned from the captaincy - but being picked for next summer is not something I take for granted," Beckham added.

"Even me going to Milan doesn't guarantee anything. It gives me a chance of being in the squad - but it doesn't guarantee it."

Player Ratings: Milan 3-0 Sampdoria

MILAN

Dida: 6
- Sampdoria managed one shot on target all match - Dida will have few easier nights than tonight.

Antonini: 7 - A good performance - he was involved in the move for the first goal and always looked to give support on the overlap.

Nesta: 6.5 - He had a very comfortable evening at the heart of defence as Sampdoria's attacking threat was almost non-existent.

Thiago Silva: 6.5 - Like Nesta, he had very little to do but coped well with the few threats that the visitors posed.

Zambrotta: 7 - With so little attacking threat from Sampdoria, he was allowed to venture forward often and teamed up well with both Pato and Abate.

Pirlo: 8.5 - Instrumental in Milan's play. Showed wonderful vision in the middle of the pitch, and was not afraid to get stuck in to win the ball back for his side.

Ambrosini: 7 - Sent in a good cross in the move for the third goal and very rarely gave the ball away. Conceded a few too many fouls though, and was lucky not to be cautioned for a challenge on Pazzini.

Seedorf: 7.5 - Took his goal very well. Although he wasted a few more opportunities with some wayward shooting, he was impeccable in possession and always looked to support the front men.

Pato: 7.5 - Effective on either side of Milan's front three and was a threat throughout the match. While his finishing was not at its best, he was alert enough to tuck home the rebound for his goal.

Ronaldinho: 8 - Set up the first two goals with some excellent deliveries, and was clearly enjoying himself on the left until he was withdrawn as a precautionary measure in the 34th minute.

Borriello: 7 - He couldn't miss his chance for the opening goal, but somewhat disappointingly it was his only shot of the game.

Substitutes:

Abate: 7 - His pace was a great threat to Sampdoria, and would have had a couple of assists but for some wayward finishing by the front three.

Huntelaar: 6 - Couldn't find the net himself, but almost set up a fourth goal for Seedorf in the dying minutes.

Flamini: 6 - He quickly settled into a match that more resembled a training game by the time he came on.

SAMPDORIA

Castellazzi: 5.5 - Conceded three goals but made some good stops to prevent the scoreline from becoming an embarrassment.

Stankevicius: 5 - Allowed Ronaldinho far too much possession, and saw Pato break past him on a number of occasions after Ronaldinho's substitution.

Gastaldello: 5.5 - Not organising the defence at all, but he did make a brilliant clearance just before the break that saved a certain goal.

Accardi: 5.5 - Really struggled to cope with the front three, and won far too few of the tackles that he went in for.

Ziegler: 5 - Completely dominated by firstly Pato and then Abate on the left flank, and offered very little defensive protection.

Padalino: 4.5 - Substituted in the 52nd minute, and that was about as much action as anyone saw from him. Very quiet performance.

Tissone: 5.5 - He had Samp's only shot on target and looked to put himself about in the middle of the pitch, but the Milan midfield totally overran him until it was too late.

Poli: 6 - Clearly frustrated by what was going on around him. He rarely gave the ball away himself, but needed to give more support to the attackers.

Mannini: 4 - Conceded possession to Zambrotta for the third goal, and was so off his game that he was replaced after 25 minutes.

Pazzini: 5 - Very isolated up front and given almost nothing to go on for the entire game.

Cassano: 5 - Lackadaisical on the ball and didn't do enough to impose himself on the match. A more lively second half, but Milan were coasting to victory by that point.

Substitutes:

Lucchini: 5.5 - Came on for Mannini in order to stem the flow of Rossoneri attacks, but seemed to be bewildered by Abate's pace and was booked for a rash tackle on him at the start of the second half.

Semioli: 5.5 - One of the more lively players in attack for Sampdoria in the latter stages.

Bellucci: 5.5 - He had 15 minutes to do something in attack for the visitors as they looked to salvage some pride, but unable to get involved.

AC Milan striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar scored his first two goals for the club against Catania this past weekend in a 2-0 victory, but has shrugged off similarities with the legendary Marco Van Basten.

The 26-year-old scored with a volley and a spectacular lob in injury time, but claims one match cannot make or break the grade with the Diavoli.

"Don't make comparisons between myself and Van Basten," the player suggested to MilanNews.

"He is part of the history of Milan, I just scored a nice goal."

The player had been heavily criticised for his performances at San Siro since leaving Real Madrid this summer, but his brace gave Milan a decisive three points - which prompted many congratulations from his team-mates.

"The embrace from my team-mates was both exciting and beautiful," he concluded.

Gianluca Zambrotta in action for Milan as he prepares for a throw in
Milan defender Gianluca Zambrotta is expecting a tough battle against Sampdoria this weekend as he turns his mind to the San Siro showdown on Saturday evening.

The Rossoneri have rediscovered their enthusiasm for Serie A as they have leapfrogged Juventus into second place. They are now seven points behind city rivals Inter, who play the Bianconeri this weekend.

'Zambro' is not thinking about the league leaders though as he reflects on a positive moment at Milanello.

"We have been training well all week and now we are thinking about Sampdoria," the defender told Milan Channel.

"We want to win because we want to stay close to the league leaders. We are in a good moment and we have to carry this forward.

"We are in second now and it's important to keep up the pace."

Despite the air of confidence blowing through Milanello, the Italian international has urged his side to keep their feet on the ground, well aware that the Blucerchiati will be a difficult obstacle to meander.

"We know that Samp are an excellent team with great players who can make the difference at any moment. It will be a tough match for us," he concluded.

Milan chief executive officer Adriano Galliani has insisted the Serie A giants have no intention of releasing want-away Gennaro Gattuso in January and they plan to tie the midfielder to a new long-term contract to see out his playing days at the San Siro.

“Not only did I propose Gattuso to stay, but also to extend and spread out his contract and end his career at Milan,” Galliani confessed to Sky Sport 24 last night.

Gattuso is currently nursing an injury, but threatened to quit the club last week after finding his first team opportunities limited this term following the appointment of Brazilian boss Leonardo over the summer.

But Galliani is adamant there is still some wiggle room to persuade the Italy international to change his mind.

“We have an agreement: Gattuso will heal first and then we’ll meet to discuss it,” he concluded.

Milan midfielder Clarence Seedorf has suggested his side will not settle for an early exit in the Champions League, claiming the team are aiming to win the prestigious trophy.

"We are just one step away from passing the group stage and Milan absolutely believe they can do it," he said during a press conference, according to Punto Sport.

"But we don't just want to get to the knockout stages, we are participating in this competition to win. This club have it in their DNA and it is out duty to aim as high as possible.

"We have the passion to tackle a tough match like tomorrow [Wednesday]. Marseille are a very strong team."

Milan have won the European Cup seven times, only second to Spanish giants Real Madrid. Seedorf himself has won the trophy four times, including twice with Milan in 2003 and 2007.

AC Milan are chasing Real Madrid winger Royston Drenthe as they attempt to bolster their squad in January.

Spanish media channel Cadena Ser reports the Rossoneri are keen on the Dutchman as Leonardo seeks to strengthen the left flank.

Drenthe has been peripheral to Manuel Pellegrini's plans at the Bernabeu this season, and voices surrounding the club suggest he could leave.

President Florentino Perez is eager to claw back some of the cash he spent during the summer, and Drenthe is said to be on the sales list. He is valued at around €6 million, and he has also been linked with Fiorentina and Juventus.

Milan have not confirmed an intent for Drenthe. However, vice-president Adriano Galliani did suggest the club would retrench in the winter transfer market, claiming that David Beckham would be the only arrival in January.

"I have never spoken about buying players - only David Beckham will arrive in January, no-one else," Galliani told Sky Sport Italia last month.
